Statim guide
Statim is a messenger with no company in the middle. Your account is twelve words on your device: no sign-up, no phone number, no email. This guide covers everything the app does, screen by screen.
What it costs you
Nobody can reset your account. Write the twelve words down and keep them offline. Lose them and the account is gone, and the app says exactly that on the screen where it first shows them to you.
The guide
Your account
Your account is a recovery phrase: twelve words the app generates on your device the first time you open it. Everything follows from those words: your keys on XMTP, Nostr and…
Chats
Three tabs: Chats, Contacts and Settings. Chats is the chat list, and every chat in it says which network it is on.
Messages
Type and tap send. A / at the start of the message opens the slash command picker; the chips above the composer run the same slash commands without typing.
Protocols
Every chat runs over one protocol. The app tells you which, and what that protocol protects, on the chat itself and in full under Settings → Protocols, where each one is set up.
WhatsApp, Signal & friends
There is no WhatsApp, Signal, Slack, iMessage or Discord code in this app, and there will not be. Those networks either forbid a third-party client on your personal account or…
Your own homeserver
This page sets up a Matrix homeserver with bridges to Messenger, Instagram, Slack and Discord, then connects this app to it. It is the recipe the developer runs at home: one…
Your own bots
This page runs two bots on a home server, a weather bot and a chat bot for the language models on your own llama-swap, and adds them to the app by name. It is the setup the…
Wallet
The recovery phrase behind your account is also a wallet, for Ethereum and the chains built on it, for Bitcoin, and for Solana. The wallet is a plugin, off on a fresh install…
Plugins & slash commands
A fresh install is a messenger and nothing else. Everything beyond that is a plugin that ships in the app switched off. Each one says what it adds and what it is allowed to…
Settings
The app asks for the PIN whenever it opens. The PIN is separate from your phone's passcode: once it is set, the Face ID prompt stops offering the passcode, so someone who knows…
On the Mac
The desktop app is the same app in a window: every screen, every protocol, every plugin. The layout puts a sidebar of chats beside the open chat, the way Telegram for macOS…
Command line
On a computer, statim does from a terminal what the app does in its window: read and search chats, send messages and files, run groups, sign in to protocols, change settings…
